Low Variables, another great extension from Gotolow.com, enables user-controlled early parsing and member group-based permissions.
The biggest reason to make this an essential add-on however, is how it lets you group any number of variables in a custom variable "group," and mask & format user input by allowing custom field types to be used (instead of the single text input field available without using Low Variables).
